Going Local

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Yesterday I attended a conference organised by the wonderfully talented Village Well.  The conference was called Going Local: Supporting Sustainable, Resilient Businesses and Communities.

The key note speaker was Michael Shuman who is the Vice President for Enterprise Development for the Training and Development Corporation of Bucksport, Maine.  A noted economist, attorney, entrepreneur and author, he is widely recognised for his research into the economic benefits of small scale business in an era of globalisation.

Michael spoke about the cost multiplication benefit of supporting local businesses in comparison to global chains and estimates that approximately 3 times the profits go to the local community when local businesses are supported.  Michael also encouraged our local leaders at council and state government level to look at where revenue “leaks” from our economies when non-local companies and chains supply our local needs when there is often a perfectly good local alternative.

The discussions prompted me to think about what we do in our practice.  Whilst it’s always tempting to specify the glamorous overseas products, there is often a really good local equivalent.  We have some good home-grown designers and manufacturers such as Dean Phillips, Darkon, Masson, Lumascape, Dynalite, Moonlighting, Planet Lighting and others beside.  We at Electrolight we will continue to support these firms and our local economies and communities as much as we can.

Also speaking was Village Well’s director Gilbert Rochecouste, dressed in an especially loud blue chequered suit!  I think it’s the first conference I have been to where someone has entertained the audience with a bongo drum.  Those who have met Gilbert will not be surprised by this revelation.

Gilbert has worked with around 200 communities and is passionately interested in place making, asking the question “how can we really work together to harness the leadership and creativity in our communities and enrich our lives?”  Gilbert showed us examples of where his practice has worked with communities to facilitate a “reconnection with place” at a deep level; renewing communities and eco systems, redefining business and community growth, wellbeing and responsibility.

The ‘Bille Jean’

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

In light of the sad news of MJ’s passing, I thought I’d share an influence he had on the lighting design profession.  Whenever someone enquires about building light into a floor (which is surprisingly often!), it is known as doing a “Billie Jean”.

If you check out the Billie Jean Video clip you will see not only the “Billie Jean floor” but also light built into rubbish bins and other lighting gems.

The Dark Knight

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

I saw the batman movie “The Dark Knight” recently and thought the lighting in the scene “He Can’t Endure This” is fantastic. The ceiling lights turn off as Bruce Wayne (Batman) and his adviser Alfred walk out the space. The rest of the film also shows great detail to lighting, definitely a recommended watch.

This is the link for you to view the clip yourself. The Dark Knight - He Can\’t Endure This

James Parrett ‘Swerve’ Sculpture lighting mockup

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Last week we conducted a lighting mock-up of James Parrett’s impressive ‘Swerve’ sculpture. The artwork is located at Beveridge, at the entry to the Mandalay housing development just off the Hume Hwy, north of Melbourne.

The sculpture stands 9m in height, and is made from corten steel. The natural oxidation of the steel provides a fantastic lighting canvas.

The lighting design consists of four in-ground metal halide fixtures of low wattage, carefully aimed to reveal the form of the sculpture.

UVA’s Volume Launched

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

I was invited to the opening of UVA’s Volume LED installation at Fed Square on Thursday night. It was a little surreal I have to say; sitting beside the Canadian consul at a beautiful table for 12 inside the western shard at the square, with onlookers peering through the windows at us enjoying a lovely meal and flowing wine.

It was good to meet Keri Elmsly and Chris Bird from UVA and to hear them talk about Volume and their new works. Such an inspiration. We talked about possible future collaboration and they are open to suggestions – wouldn’t that be interesting?

And as for the installation, it was wonderful. UVA set and “aesthetic threshold” of 12 people for the platform on which the work is installed. A UV camera tracks the visitors’ movement and the soundscape and LED display change accordingly. It is very cool. On a cold and damp Melbourne winter night there were people queuing to check it out while others sat on cold steps mesmerised by the show.

Hard at work…

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

So many of you wanted to know what we look like when we’re hard at work, that we took some shots of the office. This is what lighting designers look like…
