London Arts

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I am in Berlin attending the Professional Lighting Design Conference.  My flight schedule afforded me a few hours in London en route and I was determined not to waste the time.

Accompanied by my Londoner friend Paul Walker I went first to the Tate Modern to see what was on.  The main attraction in the turbine hall was what I would describe as a large wooden box into which visitors enter and grope about in the darkness.  The piece is by Miroslaw Balka and is titled ‘How it is’.  The absolute absence of light was quite disconcerting for a while and I did what I imagine many people do; I walked into the rear wall with my nose!  The sacrifices we make for art.

Afterwards, we jumped in a black cab (how very London) and went to check out Anish Kapoor’s new sculpture in the courtyard of The Royal Academy of Arts.  Pretty much the opposite of Balka’s black box, this work relies entirely on reflected light which reveals the wonderful Burlington House which dates back to the 17th century.

It is interesting the way each artist expresses his work through light, especially given there is no electric light associated with either.

More awards for Electrolight

Monday, October 26th, 2009

On Friday night Electrolight was bestowed with the IES Lighting Design Award of Excellence for the MTC theatre.  We also collected an award of commendation for the University of Melbourne faculty of economics and commerce lecture theatre.  In the category of luminaire design, we also took out top honours with the Fireworks chandelier that we designed for Crown Casino.

The awards are always very special because they are judged by our peers.  This year we have now picked up three awards of excellence; for context I have been involved with entering these awards every year and this is the first time I have been involved in an excellence winning project since Webb Bridge got up in 2003.

The awards that we have received belong to our team whose committment and talent have led us to where we are today.  To all involved well done, I am really proud.

Roger Hiorns Sculpture

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

In the studio, we have all been digging Roger Hiorns’ entry to this year’s Turner Prize.

Roger’s installation comprises a boarded-up south London council flat filled with 90,000 litres of copper sulphate which has been allowed to dry revealing an absolutely sublime crystalline formation on the internal surfaces.  How the light reacts with these surfaces is quite wonderful.

500 Bourke Street

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Jess and I have just returned from the site of 500 Bourke Street - a foyer refurbishment project with renowned Australian architect John Wardle.  The lighting scheme has just been powered up and this is a sneak preview - the building is scheduled to open to the public next week.

The lighting scheme comprises 400 bare fluoro tubes but we hope the similarity with a SevenEleven ends there.  These lights reveal the folding facets of the ceiling which create an amazing texture.  The scheme has a very different appearance depending on which angle you view from - one direction the lights are hidden, the other you see bare lamps.  In this photo you see both thanks to the reflection in the large windows at the end.

Hardware Societe

Monday, October 12th, 2009

It’s always lovely to see friends of the company doing well.

I took lunch today at Hardware Societe, a superb little eatery just down the road from our Melbourne office in Hardware Lane.  The food was absolutely great- a slow roasted pork with brandied apple baguette for me and a quiche for my companion.

Hardware Societe belongs to Will and Di Keser.  Di worked with us for over a year and made a wonderful contribution to our firm.  I am not at all surprised that her drive, tenacity and attention to detail combined with Will’s abundant creative flair in the kitchen has created one of the Melbourne lane-way’s hidden gems. Take my advice and get down to try it out before word gets out about how good it is.

Top Honours for Electrolight in Queensland Lighting Design Awards

Monday, October 12th, 2009

On Friday night, at the Queensland Lighting industry’s night of nights I had the honour and privilege of receiving the Award of Excellence on behalf of Electrolight for our light sculpture in the Robina Shopping Centre.

The work draws on the principles of lighting theory, sine waves of light metaphorically passing through the space, made manifest in a series of concave and converse ellipses, silver- leafed,  suspended from the ceiling and dramatically illuminated with spot lights.  As is often the case with these things, there were many people involved whose contribution shaped the outcome - Horatio, Rachel and others at Electrolight, our clients from QIC  Stuart Miller and Geoff East, our fabricator Dean Phillips who worked closely with us and used his own lateral thinking (using a boat builder to craft the moulds was his idea).  To all of you this award is dedicated.

Melbourne Rectangular Stadium

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Every time I pass the Rectangular Stadium my heart-rate quickens.

They have now started to install the cladding panels which you can see at the top of the roof and you get a glimpse of what it will look like when completed - without the lights of course.  As for the lights themselves, we believe the installation will be Australia’s largest LED installation with some 1600 fixtures and 4800 individually addressible colours.  It really is going to be something out of the ordinary.  Computer renders never do these kind of schemes justice but if you would like a glimpse of what’s in store when the stadium is complete in March 2010, click here to watch the video.

IALD Elections

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

I have decided to run for the Membership Committee of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD).

Founded in 1969 and based in Chicago, Illinois, USA, the IALD is an internationally recognised organisation dedicated solely to the concerns of independent, professional lighting designers.  The Membership Committee, as you might expect, deals with new applications to join the Association and hence committee’s role os of great importance to the continuing relevance of the organisation.

If elected I would seek to encourage a more international membership base.  Professional lighting design has grown as an industry in the decade in which I have been in Australia and I would like to see better representation of our profession locally and cross-fertilisation of ideas internationally.

Electrolight to light up Midsumma Festival!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Electrolight is proud to announce sponsorship of the 2010 Midsumma Festival in Melbourne.

Since 1988, Midsumma has been Victoria’s premier gay and lesbian arts and cultural festival, presenting an annual community celebration and encouraging the development of innovative artistic content and a unique cultural experience.

Our sponsorship of the festival will be through the provision of lighting design input to the programme, particularly the T Dance on 17 January 2010 where we will attempt to make the the lighting at the lawns at Alexandra Gardens look as wonderful and magical as the event itself.

In return for our creative input we have been promised eternal love and support from Midsumma.  Gotta love that!

Coming soon to a freeway near you…

Monday, October 5th, 2009

One of the more fun aspects of designing lighting to large infrastructure projects such as the Westgate Freeway Project is the opportunity to light the urban design features.  On this project we had the privilege of working alongside Denton Corker Marshall to illuminate the inner curved surfaces of this portal through which the new freeway will pass.
