LightCycle

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be any more community lighting amazingness from Electrolight, along we come with the third instllment of LightCycle.  LightCycle is a biannual sustainable light fixture design competition as part of the State of Design Festival.

In the first LightCycle in 2007, entrants were asked to use a compact fluorescent lamp and create a light fixture that embodied the principles of environmental sustainability.  The competition was part of the 2007 Melbourne Design Festival.

In 2009 the compact fluorescent lamp was replaced by a 1m strip of LED and again entrants were asked to create a sustainable light.  The exhibition formed part of the 2009 State of Design Festival and was held at Guildford Lane Gallery in Melbourne’s CBD.

This year we will issue entrants with a brand new, warm white LED lamp from Osram housed in a super-slick plug, braided cable and lampholder from top Australian lighting manufacturer Dean Phillips.  Entrants bring their creativity and craftsmanship to make a new light fitting to inspire and amaze, forming a major event in this year’s State of Design Festival.

And the twist this year is that we are partnering with the Donkey Wheel Charitable Trust by hosting the event at Donkey Wheel House.    Selected entries will go on permanent display at DWH, transforming the basement space and creating a fantastic opportunity for the design community to help a great cause.  Of course there will be other prizes on offer for the winners as well.

Date: 22 July 2011.  Watch this space for more information soon…

LightCycle is back!

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

We are pleased to announce that LightCycle will be back again this year as part of the 2011 State of Design festival.

LightCycle is a competition to design a sustainable light fixture using lighting equipment provided by Electrolight.  We first run LightCycle in 2007 when we gave entrants a twisty compact fluorescent lamp and asked them to create something beautiful using this ‘ugly duckling’ of a lamp.  In 2009 we ran the comp again, this time with a flexible strip of LED.  In both instances the response was phenomenal – see the gallery of entries for images.

So what’s the theme this year?  You will have to wait and see for now but watch this space…

LightCycle Wrap

Friday, July 31st, 2009

LightCycle is 2009 is over and all that remains is for me to wrap things up.

LightCycle 2009 has been a great success.  Many thanks to everyone who has got involved and made it what it was.  So many people to thanks – my team at Electrolight (especially our new permanent team member Amelia), the State of Design Festival team, Guildford Lane Gallery, the sponsors, judges and of course everybody who entered.

Some highlights for me were the opening night – soooo many people!!!  The diversity of entries – loved the piss jelly of Christ from James Staughton although we’re still wondering what that has to do with sustainability.  The craftsmanship of so many entries and, of course, our winners.

And talking of winners – the votes have been counted (literally hundreds of them) and we have a people’s choice winner: Specular from Giles Matthews.  Giles is now looking for a bigger place to live as he has won the “No Copy” pendant from uber-trendy Belgian lighting company Dark.  The pendant is massive!  Thanks to Inlite for donating this prize.

Look out for LightCycle when it comes around again in 2011.  Meanwhile, if you have any comments or feedback relating to LightCycle please post it on this blog.

Cheers, Paul

We have a winner!!!

Monday, July 20th, 2009

After months of anticipation, lots of hard work, no small amount of creativity and a spectacular finale, we have a winner.  Well done to John Lim whose bread bag tag light has scooped top prize in the 2009 LightCycle competition.

Thank you to everybody who took part in this year’s competition, to all the sponsors, the judges, my team at Electrolight and to State of Design for making this competition such a fantastic success.  Also thanks to the hundreds of people who turned up for thje opening on Friday night – great to see you all there.  This competition has further demonstrated the extent of creativity in this state and the exhibition is well worth a look if you haven’t been there yet.

LightCycle Judging Complete

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

After many hours of deliberation the judges have reached a decision on which of the entries have made our top five.  This was a particularly tough job, not just because the quality of the entries was so high but the sheer diversity of responses to the brief was amazing.  Again, thanks to all who have entered and a special thanks to our Judges Chris Barnett, Soren Luckins and Simon Knott who have given up their time to do such a thorough review of the entries.

LightCycle Launched

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Welcome to the first post of our shiny new blog.  We intend to use this space to tell the world about what we are up to as a practice, to share our thoughts and the things that we find interesting in our wonderful world of lighting.  We welcome feedback and for people to share with us things that excites them.  If it’s associated with lighting and interesting then we want to know about it.
