The Meaning of Light

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

The third and final event in that we are curating as part of the Light in Winter festival at Fed Square.

Following on from last year’s successful event we have a new line-up of speakers and a brand new venue at ACMI’s main cinema. What’s the same is the question we put to each of the speakers: What does light mean to you?

This will be one of the highlights of the Light in Winter festival so make sure you get along.

AAMI Park IES Talk

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Last night I had the privilege of presenting our design work on the AAMI Park stadium to the Victorian chapter of the IES.

Despite howling wind and driving rain, an amazing 100 people turned up to hear presentations about the artistic feature lighting, architectural lighting to the stadium and the sports lighting.  The credit for such a great turn-out needs to be largely attributed to the superb work of chapter president Adele Locke.  Adele has worked tirelessly towards the development of the Victorian chapter and has made the chapter technical meetings a cornerstone of any lighting enthusiast’s diary.

We were also especially proud last night when our very own Dave Anderson was announced Vice President of the chapter to succeed Adele in 2013.  Dave has big shoes to fill.

Fabulous Foyers and Facades

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

This truly is the season for community lighting events and we are proud to play our part in both the Light in Winter festival at Federation Square and the State of Design festival.

We kick off our series of three events for Light in Winter on 15 June with a guided tour around some of Melbourne’s most interesting foyers and facades.  We will take registered participants on a walk from Fed Square through Melbourne’s streets and laneways to see some of the most fabulous foyers and facacdes that the fine city of Melbourne has to offer.  We’ll be going to 101 Collins Street, Capitol Theatre, Royal Mail House, Regent Theatre, 500 Bourke Street, 181 William Street and 31 Queen Street.

The tour will conclude at the top level of Eureka Tower where we will be able to see yet more impressive lighting installations including the award-winning AAMI Park, the Victoria Arts Centre spire and MTC theatre.

If you would like to come along register via facades@fedsquare.com. But hurry, spaces are very limited…

Ready Steady Light

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

We are very excited to announce details of Ready Steady Light, one of the events we are organising for this year’s Light in Winter festival at Fed Square in Melbourne.

What is it and how does it work you may be wondering…

It’s a four hour group activity between 12 and 4pm on 22 June for pre-registered teams to transform an everyday, domestic object into a fabulous work of light art.

You will be provided with a large scale object that forms the basis of the work and to which you add light and materials drawn from the ‘Useful Box’. Useful Box materials may include fabric, rope, cable ties, light globes, mirror, glow tapes, cardboard and a range of recycled things.

The foundation of your light work may range from a shopping trolley to a step ladder and from a bicycle to an ironing board. It will be ‘luck of the draw’ on the day. Riggers will hoist and secure your light sculpture to form a permanent part of the “Light Hearts” installation in the middle of Fed Square. With tools and technical assistance supplied, release your inner sculptural lighting designer and contribute to the wonder of Light in Winter. Works will be unveiled from 6pm, with a chance to win a designer light fitting for your efforts.

To register your interest, submit your team (max 5) and tell us which object in your house you’ve always thought would be better as a light! Email us at  readysteadylight@electrolight.com.au

Hargreaves Mall

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Our work on Hargreaves Mall in Bendigo has been featured in Landscape Architecture Australia magazine.

This project was designed around 3 years ago with Rush Wright and Associates.  Its fair to say that not everybody has loved the design but now that the trees have grown a bit the vision of RWA starts to emerge and is looking fantastic.

We have to say also – what an amazing front cover on the magazine!

Socialight

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Socialight is Electrolight’s contribution to the City of Melbourne and Federation Square to celebrate Light in Winter. A program of four events has been devised to celebrate the wonder and complexity of illumination and to bring community together through the exploration of light.

These events occur on the Wednesday evenings throughout the four weeks of the Light in Winter Festival in June 2011.

This blog will explore each of the events in more detail over the coming weeks but as a taster, this is what lighting lovers in Melbourne can look forward to:

LX1 – Wednesday 8th of June
Electrolight proudly presents a 75 minute hosted forum with Melbourne’s leading theatre lighting designers. Held in the intimate 80 seat ACMI Studio 1, audiences have the unique opportunity to hear how Melbourne’s lighting designers craft their designs and manage their process. Hear about the latest shows that they are working on and have the opportunity to ask questions. Be the first to get the inside knowledge on how it all works in the LX department.

Fabulous Foyers and Facades – Wednesday 15th of June
A 90 minute guided walk through the Melbourne CBD led by Electrolight to highlight the spectacular illuminated facades and foyers located in our beautiful city. Assemble at Fed Square and finish at the top of Eureka Tower for post event drinks.

Ready Steady Light – Wednesday 22nd of June
A four hour group activity between 12 and 4pm for pre-registered teams to construct a light object from found, recycled and provided materials. Your construction will then form a permanent part of the “Sacred Space” installation in the heart of Fed Square. With a road case of gear at your disposal and technical assistance, release your inner sculptural lighting designer and contribute to the wonder of Light in Winter. Works will be unveiled from 6pm, with a chance to win a designer light fitting for your efforts.

The Meaning of Light – Wednesday 29th of June
Following on from last year’s successful Meaning of Light hosted by Electrolight outside in ‘The Square,’ Meaning of Light moves out of the winter cold and into the warmth of ACMI Cinema 1.  A selection of invited guests share what light means to them and how it impacts the work that they make and present in the public realm. From acclaimed photographer Shannon McGrath to innovative craftsman Marc Pascal, cutting edge medical researcher Dr Tracey Sletten and more. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear why light matters to them.

This is by far the biggest community project the practice has undertaken and we hope you are excited about this as we are.

PK Melbourne – What is light?

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

We had a fantastic night on Thursday at Pecha Kucha Melbourne.  Our very own Dave Anderson and top North Fitzroy architect Antony Di Mase came together to curate a special Pecha Kucha all about light with the proceeds going to earthquake relief in Christchurch, Japan and Haiti.

Dave and Antony asked the 11 speakers a simple question: what is light? The diversity of responses was fantastic and the presentations were mostly very interesting with not one being the same as another.  Stand-outs for me were lighting designers Nicola Andrews and David Becker (with his tardis) and photographer Matt Irwin (who overcame a technical problem of no sound at the end of his slides and ad-libbed to great effect). At one point I thought he was about to break into an interpretive dance.

These sort of events take an enormous amount of effort to organise and it was evident that a lot of thought and hard work had gone into making the night the roaring success that it was.  Well done Dave and Antony as well as the crew from PK.

Pecha Kucha

Monday, April 18th, 2011

We are proud to support and promote the upcoming  Pecha Kucha event in Melbourne – and it’s all about lighting.

The event came about after the judging of the IES Vic lighting design awards last year.  Awards convenor (Electrolight’s own) Dave Anderson and judge Antony Di Mase were keen to continue the conversation, asking speakers to respond to the question: what is light?

It should be a fantastic night – many of the prominent designers and thinkers will be presenting and all proceeds go towards earthquake relief efforts in NZ, Japan and Haiti.  If you love lighting (and if you are reading this blog you probably do) get yourself along.

Details: Donkey Wheel House, 673 Bourke St, 6.30, Thursday 28 April, $10 on the door.

Electrolight’s work featured in Frame Magazine

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

We are very proud to have our work on the State Theatre of WA featured on the uber-cool Frame magazine website.  To check out the article for yourself click here.

LightCycle is back!

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

We are pleased to announce that LightCycle will be back again this year as part of the 2011 State of Design festival.

LightCycle is a competition to design a sustainable light fixture using lighting equipment provided by Electrolight.  We first run LightCycle in 2007 when we gave entrants a twisty compact fluorescent lamp and asked them to create something beautiful using this ‘ugly duckling’ of a lamp.  In 2009 we ran the comp again, this time with a flexible strip of LED.  In both instances the response was phenomenal – see the gallery of entries for images.

So what’s the theme this year?  You will have to wait and see for now but watch this space…
